Now that the summer is kicking off, there’s one thing we’re all about to do more of…. Mowing! It’s essential to a beautiful summer yard, keeping critters out and the HOA happy. When operating a mower or zero-turn, the first thing we need to consider is safety. Since mowing is something we do frequently, it’s often easy to forget that we’re operating heavy machinery.
Before you mow, you want to pick up all branches and other debris that could go flying and avoid mowing over any rocky areas. You don’t want the rocks shooting through your living room window and turning your house into an Allstate commercial. Make sure kids and pets are inside or in a safe area before firing up that zero-turn. Mowing is loud (obviously), kids and pets tend to get in your blind spots where you can’t see or hear them. Even if you picked up the yard for debris, there is still a chance that there could be items flying out of the mower that could injure others.
Before you start cutting those blades, make sure you are wearing goggles, hearing protection, long pants, and closed-toed shoes (we know it’s summer and hot, but these are essential to staying safe while mowing, so put on some pants!) Summer is prime time for day drinking, but if you’re turning your Saturday into a yard workday, treat yourself with a beverage AFTER mowing and not before. If something is stuck in the mower, make sure the mower is completely off before attempting to remove any lodged items.
