Trailer Safety

Trailer Safety DOs and DON’Ts

In honor of Trailer Safety Week being celebrated this month, we want to give you a list of the DOs and DON’Ts of trailer safety. Trailer safety is crucial when it comes to towing any type of trailer. There are certain rules and regulations that every trailer owner should follow to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road and with summer in full swing, you might be hitting the road more often with your trailer.

DO ensure that your trailer is properly hitched and secured to your vehicle. This includes making sure the hitch ball size matches the coupler size, and that safety chains are properly attached.  We know you’re ready to get on the road, especially if you have a fun weekend planned, but taking the time to make sure your trailer is secure will ensure your safety.

DON’T overload your trailer or exceed its weight capacity. This can cause damage to your vehicle and make it difficult to control your trailer on the road. We know you want to haul all of your favorite equipment to your destination, but make sure you know the weight capacities before heading out.

DO check your trailer lights before hitting the road. Make sure they are working properly so that other drivers can see you and be aware of your movements.

DON’T forget to adjust your driving habits when towing a trailer. Remember that your vehicle will handle and brake differently, so give yourself plenty of space and time to maneuver. Always drive at a safe speed when towing a trailer. It is important to follow the speed limit and drive slower in adverse weather conditions.

DO inspect your trailer and tires regularly for any signs of wear or damage. This can help prevent accidents and keep you and other drivers safe.

DO use FlatOut™ QuickStrike™ On Road formula to ensure the safety of your tires. This tire sealant can quickly and easily seal punctures up to 1/2 inch and slow leaks, helping to prevent tire blowouts and keep you safe on the road. It lasts for the life of the tire, so you’ll be protected for many trips to come. Check the dosage for your trailer here

Overall, taking the time to properly inspect and maintain a trailer, as well as being aware of the additional challenges of towing, can help ensure a safe and successful trip.
